Google AI Overviews: Who Gets Cited, and How to Get In
A snapshot study of AI Overview references across six commercial queries: what kinds of pages get cited, how small the citation pool is, and the four routes into it.

The AI Overview citation pool is small — about nine references per query in our snapshot — and it is not mostly vendor homepages. We pulled live Google SERPs (US, English, October 2026) for six commercial "best X" queries and extracted every reference attached to the AI Overview: 54 cited URLs in total. What appears in that pool, and what never does, tells you exactly where to aim if you want your product named in the answer.
Method and limits
Six queries (best ai video generator, best ai writing tools, best crm for small business, best project management software, best email marketing tools, best seo tools), one SERP snapshot each via a SERP data provider, references de-duplicated by registrable domain. This is a snapshot, not a panel: pools vary by query, freshness and personalization. The pattern, however, is consistent enough to plan against.
What the pool is made of
Classifying all 54 references by page type:
| Reference type | Share of citations | Examples in our snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Comparison listicles & how-to guides | ~70% | zapier.com (5 of 6 queries), pcmag, cnet, forbes, niche agency blogs |
| Video reviews | in every query | youtube.com review roundups |
| Community threads | ~13% | reddit.com (4 of 6), quora, medium/substack posts |
| Vendor-owned pages | ~17%, clustered | canva, runway, kling, higgsfield (video tools); mailchimp, zoho, slack (CRM/email) |
Four observations worth acting on:
1. The listicle is the unit of citation. The single most-cited domain in our snapshot was a comparison publisher, present in five of six queries. AI Overviews are answering "which one should I pick", and the pages that already answer that question — with tables, criteria and verdicts — are the pages retrieval reaches for. If your category has three dominant listicles, those three pages are effectively the gatekeepers of your AI visibility.
2. Video reviews count. A YouTube roundup appeared in all six pools. The citation is to the video page, but the effect is the same: products covered in the roundups get named.
3. Community threads are in the pool. Reddit appeared in four of six queries, plus Quora and long-form personal posts. Threads where practitioners compare tools from experience read as high-trust, low-commercial-intent sources. This is the data-backed argument for honest participation in category subreddits — not link dropping, but being the product people describe accurately from use.
4. Vendor pages get cited in "tool" categories more than "service" categories. In AI video generation, four vendor domains were referenced directly; in email marketing, vendor blogs appeared alongside editorial. Where the product is inspectable (free tier, visible output), the vendor's own page is a primary source. Where the product is a service, retrieval leans on third parties. Know which side of that line you are on: on the vendor-cited side, your own comparison and pricing pages are citation assets; on the other side, your energy goes to earning third-party mentions.
How small "small" is
Nine references per answer means share-of-voice in AI Overviews is nearly zero-sum: for a given query, either you are in the nine or you are not. That changes the strategy from "publish more" to "be in the specific pages the nine come from" — the dominant listicles, the review videos, the canonical threads — plus own the pages on your domain that answer the question better than anyone else's.
The four routes in
- Be the best answer on your own domain. One page per buyer question, answer-first, table-backed (see the AI SEO playbook).
- Earn a slot in the gatekeeper listicles. Pitch the three-to-five comparison publishers that own your category's pool, with facts and assets, not adjectives.
- Be describable in community threads. Accurate, useful participation where your category is discussed; the thread itself may end up cited.
- Keep a permanent listing footprint. Directories and aggregators are the neutral third-party mentions that corroborate your facts; aat.ee's network exists for exactly this, with dofollow listings on indexed domains via the submit flow.
FAQ
Do AI Overview references equal rankings? No. A page can rank #5 organically and never be referenced, and vice versa. The reference list is chosen for answer-construction, not by rank order — which is why listicle structure beats raw authority in our snapshot.
Is this the same pool ChatGPT draws from? Different systems, overlapping composition: comparison pages, community threads and primary sources dominate both. See how to rank in ChatGPT and which assistant cites you.
Will the pool stay this small? Directionally yes — synthesized answers cite what they used, and answers stay short. Expect the composition to shift (more primary sources as vendors structure their pages) rather than the pool to widen.
