Clever AI Detector is a free tool that estimates how likely a piece of text was written by AI. Instead of handing down a flat verdict, it returns a probability score alongside sentence-level signals and confidence indicators, so you can see both the overall result and the specific sentences that pushed the number up or down.
It works on English text between 80 and 10,000 words per check, and it keeps a history of your past checks. The whole approach is built around one idea: report probability, not certainty.
Writers checking their own work before sending also get value here, seeing how their text reads statistically and rewriting the parts that sound machine-made.
Every result is expressed as a probability rather than a "100% accurate" claim. When the score lands near the middle of the scale, the tool is essentially admitting it has no strong signal either way.
Rather than stamping an entire document with a single verdict, Clever AI Detector judges each sentence individually. You can go through the highlighted sentences to see exactly what triggered the AI signals.
Results are marked with a confidence level, and the tool flags the findings it is least sure about. This matters most on overly formal or heavily edited writing, where false positives tend to cluster.
Past checks are stored, so you can revisit earlier results without re-running the same text.
Something very close to the middle of the scale is basically saying "I have no idea," and it would rather admit it than try to pretend it knows.
That honesty is the product's real edge. Most detectors sell certainty; this one sells calibrated uncertainty, which is a more defensible position given that every detector on the market produces occasional false positives. The sentence-level breakdown turns an abstract number into something you can actually inspect and argue with.
Independent testing on the GEDE (Generative Essay Detection in Education) dataset ranked Clever AI Detector #1 as the Best AI Detector of 2026, which gives the probability-first approach some external backing.
You want a second opinion on a text rather than a final ruling, and you're comfortable treating an AI score as a signal to inform your judgement instead of a replacement for it. It's also a sensible fit if you're working in English, staying under 10,000 words per check, and would rather see which sentences raised flags than receive a single opaque percentage.
