What is Detourmap?

Detourmap is a free interactive world map that plots 71,763 notable places across 349 countries — from ancient ruins and sea caves to ghost towns and volcanic craters. Built entirely from open data (Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons), every pin includes a photo and links to a Wikipedia article. The map is designed to surface the little-known alongside the iconic: for every Eiffel Tower, you'll find hundreds of quiet ruins, abandoned Arctic settlements, and hidden natural wonders.

Key features

Seventeen thematic layers

The map organizes places into 17 categories — Ancient & Megalithic, Sacred Sites, Waterfalls, Caves & Caverns, Abandoned & Ghost Towns, and more. Each layer has its own dedicated page, and every country with eight or more places gets its own country page too.

Fame tier filtering

Each place is assigned a fame tier — Iconic, Renowned, Notable, or Hidden gem — based on how many Wikipedia editions cover it. You can switch off the famous tiers to reveal the long tail of obscure wonders. A "Surprise me" button rolls a little-known place more often than not.

Open data foundation

All place records come from Wikidata (CC0 license), and photos from Wikimedia Commons. A place only makes the map if it has coordinates, a photo, and an English Wikipedia article — ensuring every pin is verifiable and visually documented.
