One-tap videocalls. For elderly users and other technophobes

MiNonna was inspired by a very simple problem: video calling is easy for most of us, but it can still feel unnecessarily complicated for older adults.
Too many apps assume that every user is comfortable navigating contacts, notifications, menus and multiple call controls.
For someone who rarely uses a smartphone, even starting a video call can become frustrating.
Families often end up providing instructions repeatedly, while the person they want to stay connected with may avoid calling altogether.
We wanted to create a much simpler experience: a single tap connects grandma (or grandpa) to a default contact. And just like that, they're now able to make a videocall!
The idea evolved significantly while building it. Initially, we focused mainly on simplifying the interface. Over time, we realised that simplicity is not just about using larger buttons or removing features. It also means reducing uncertainty, preventing accidental actions, simplifying onboarding and designing every screen around what the least technical user needs to understand.
MiNonna gradually became a focused alternative to general-purpose communication apps: not another social network or messaging platform, but a private, straightforward way for families to stay connected through video calls.
The goal has remained the same throughout the process: make technology disappear as much as possible, so that the conversation becomes the only thing that matters.

MiNonna: Senior Video Calls is a purpose-built video calling app designed to remove the friction that older adults often face with mainstream communication tools. Instead of navigating contacts, notifications, and layered menus, MiNonna distills the experience down to a single, meaningful action: one tap on a loved one's photo starts a video call. It's a private, focused alternative to general-purpose messaging platforms—not a social network, but a dedicated channel for family connection.
The core interaction is deliberately minimal: tap a loved one's photo and the call begins. There are no complex menus, no confusing buttons, and no multi-step dialing processes to remember.
Calls are engineered to be high-quality and reliable, performing well even on slower internet connections. This ensures that the visual connection remains strong, regardless of the household's bandwidth.
Up to 20 family members can be added to a secure, private network. This creates a trusted group where contacts are easy to manage and everyone is in one place.
Only the Group Admin pays for the subscription. All other family members join and make video calls for free while the plan is active, simplifying the financial side of staying connected.
"Make technology disappear as much as possible, so that the conversation becomes the only thing that matters."
This philosophy drives every design decision in MiNonna. It's not just about larger buttons or removing features; it's about reducing uncertainty and preventing accidental actions. The app is built around what the least technical user needs to understand, with family members handling setup and trusted contacts. The result is a calm, focused experience where the person on the other end of the call feels familiar and comforting—not a piece of software to be mastered.
You're looking for a way to keep a grandparent or older relative actively engaged in video calls without the constant need for tech support. If you value a private, secure space for up to 20 family members and want a single subscription to cover everyone, MiNonna offers a refreshingly simple solution. It's also worth exploring if you believe that connection should come before features, and that a well-designed, minimal interface can be more powerful than a feature-rich one.
